An order of fungi in the phylum CHYTRIDIOMYCOTA comprising anaerobic chytrids that inhabit the rumen and cecum of herbivorous animals. Genera (all in the lone family Neocallimasticaceae) include NEOCALLIMASTIX, Orpinomyces, Piromonas, PIROMYCES, and Sphaeromonas.
